"Rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings." - 1 Peter 4:13.

Had Peter done as he promised to do, and followed Christ from Gethsemane, content to be bound with him, mocked with him, scourged with him, condemned with him, and crucified with him, what an incomparably exalted place would he have had in our regard. Nothing but his own treacherous heart hindered him from occupying this worthiest and sublimest of places occupied by mere finite men. However, as his Lord generously foretold, he followed him afterwards. He met the same hostility, the same bitterness and cruelty; and we read in the Acts that he rejoiced in being counted worthy to suffer for the name of the Lord Jesus. Oh! that we might have faith in the day of reproach and injury encountered in Christ’s service, to perceive him, even the Prince of the kings of the earth, at our side, dividing with us the indignities that are heaped upon us. Who would not call that a light affliction? Who would not rejoice?
