Devotional: 19th of Av

I keep pursuing the goal in order to win the prize offered by God's upward calling in the Messiah Yeshua (Philippians 3:14).

A man who was interested in learning to shoot well visited a practice range. There, as he surveyed each of the bays where the targets were located, he noticed one that had all perfect bulls-eyes. Intent on finding the one responsible for such sharpshooting, he was told that Simon Greenstein was his man. He went out in search of him.

When he found Mr. Greenstein, he was shocked that this man of small stature had such enormous shooting prowess. He asked the little man, "How are you able to hit the center of the target each time?" Mr. Greenstein replied, "It's simple. First I shoot and then I draw a circle around the bullet hole so that the bullet is in the exact center of the target."

Unfortunately, too many people live their lives like the "sharpshooting" Mr. Greenstein. We act first and then justify the act by rationalization. Instead, we need to get acquainted with the target and shoot to hit the mark.

One of the Bible's words for sin is chet. Chet describes an archer whose arrow has fallen short of the target. The Lord's guidebook, the Scriptures, clearly circumscribes our target—God's will for our lives. We need to make sure our acts aim to hit it!

...consult the Word of God and aim my actions to fall within the target.
