Devotional: 20th of Shevat

A person does not live on food alone but on everything that comes from the mouth of ADONAI (Deuteronomy 8:3).

Moshe's analogy between God's inspired words and food is a marvelous picture for understanding the need to internalize God's Word. Food is necessary because it contains the raw energy and nutrients the body needs to stay healthy and strong. If we don't eat every day, our bodies lose a hunger for food and eventually wither away and die. It is not enough for us to buy food or look at food.We must eat food if it is to give us the sustenance we need.

In the same way, the human spirit requires God's Word to maintain a healthy and strong spiritual life. God's Word accomplishes this because it is the overflow of God's spirit and life (John 6:53,63). If we don't partake of God's Word every day, there is a good chance of losing our hunger for his Word; our spiritual life can potentially wither away and become as good as dead. We should be able to say with Job, "I treasure his words more than my daily food" (Job 23:12).

But do we eat God's Word as often as we eat our meals? Do we hunger for it every day? Or do we go for weeks without this spiritual sustenance? It is not enough to own the Scriptures or merely look at them. The Scriptures must be read and devoured. When we partake of God's Word in this way, we become spiritually strong and zealous for the Lord.
