Devotional: 4th of Teves

From one man he has made every nation living on the entire surface of the earth (Acts 17:26).

For several years the Ku Klux Klan placed a cross in our city's main square during December. This act caused great controversy. Invariably, someone would knock the cross over during the night, which always got news coverage. Others would write notes expressing their opinion of the Klan, sticking them on a fence surrounding the cross. Most of what was written is not worth repeating. However, there was one exception. It simply contained the verse quoted above. I had never thought about the words "from one man he has made every nation" until I read them on that fence. That one verse, hand printed on an old piece of cardboard, exposed the mockery of the Klan's white supremacy.

The rabbis of old asked, "Why did the Creator form life from a single ancestor?" They answered, "So the families of mankind cannot boast that they sprang from superior stock, but instead might recognize their kinship with all men." Although every people-group, without exception, has sometimes forgotten this truth, we as Messianic believers must never forget it. When Kefa (Peter) declared that "God does not play favorites" (Acts 10:34), he was saying that Yeshua shed his blood for every individual in whose veins Adam's blood flows. When that biblical truth takes hold of our hearts, there is no room for prejudice, racism or anti-Semitism.

...ask the Lord to cleanse me of all prejudice, and to help me see all mankind as he does: made "from one man."
