Devotional: 3rd of Tishrei
He will bring to light what is now hidden in darkness; he will expose the motives of people's hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5).
The sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) on Rosh HaShanah ushers in ten sacred days that end on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). This ten day period is known as the Yamim Nora'im (Days of Awe).
Traditional Jews believe that during this sacred time, one's final destiny in the Age to Come is sealed in the Book of Life. Consequently, our people have approached the Yamim Nora'im with great reverence—getting right with God and man, forgiving and asking forgiveness, tying up the loose ends of life.
After this life is over, we will all stand before God. Once we breathe our last breath, we will never again be able to prepare for eternity. Therefore, this present life is a sacred time. These are our Days of Awe, given for us to prepare for eternity. We should use them wisely, tying up the loose ends of our lives. We must get right with God and man, forgiving those who have wronged us, so that we can be forgiven. We should also express our love to the ones who need it, for eternity stands just around the corner, and we will never again have these days to ready ourselves for it. These are our Yamim Nora'im, our Days of Awe!
