10 Minutes Peace

"Comfort Zone"
Date Posted: March 27, 2004

This time of year in Central Illinois it's hard to get dressed in the morning. When you go out the door it may be 28 degrees, but by afternoon it can warm up to the high 40s. Sweater? Jacket? Hat? Layers? Open-toed shoes? These are the dilemmas. As we say here, "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute!"

It's especially tough for me, as my husband claims, I have a comfort zone of two degrees. Above 72 -- I'm sweating, below 70 -- I'm chilled. (I'm not quite that bad, but I do like cooler weather.) The point is I like to dress within my comfort zone.

How often, though, do I check my comfort zone as a Christian? Am I willing to step out and stand up for my beliefs and God's truth? Do I defend injustice, especially when it comes to expressing religious freedom? Am I willing to share the gospel with those I meet, or an even less comfortable scenario -- with those I already know?

And from a different perspective, am I comfortable with or tolerant of things I should abhor: violence or profanity on TV, disrespect from children; quarreling among Christian brothers and sisters over trivial matters?

From either direction, I need to get uncomfortable -- turn up the heat -- whatever it takes to stand up for Jesus!

As I went through journalism school I had an idealistic expectation that I could use my writing to right the wrongs and save the world. What I didn't consider was that someone already had! My job is to share, to defend, to love and to stand up for truth and Jesus our Savior!

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." -- Deuteronomy 31:6

During your ten minutes this week, ask God to show you where to step out of your comfort zone. Then pray for the courage to take that step!
