Spring Cleaning
Date Posted: April 8, 2006

As I lay in bed the other night, before turning out the light, I noticed a cob web clinging to the corner. I don't want to think about what's lurking in the corners I can't see.

Cleaning is not my favorite way to spend time. It's not even on my list! But it has to be done sooner or later, and waiting 'til later only means the dust will be deeper and the task longer.

My kids apparently share my dislike of cleaning, as evidenced by the knee-deep toys in the playroom, but they also procrastinate until it becomes a daunting task.

Sometimes the only way to get it done is to jump in feet first and swim through the mess.

As I dive into the heavy cleaning this spring I want to sweep out the cobwebs not just in the corners of my bedroom, but in the corners of my heart - forgiving and asking forgiveness, letting go of resentments and opening up to joy.

I want to scrub my schedule free of wasted time, less busywork and more meaningful relationships.

I want to polish my prayer life and make it more of a priority - more "write it down and sit in the prayer closet" than whispered words on the fly.

It's easy to ignore the dust for a few days, then a week. Before long it has built up into something unsightly and unhealthy. Spiritual dirt is the same. It builds gradually, and before we realize it, the scum of apathy and the grime of resentment have built up into an ugly pile of sin.

Time to break out the dust mop and the devotional.

"Create in me a clean heart, O Lord, my God, and renew a right spirit withing me." - Psalm 51:10
