The Religious Buffet
Date Posted: May 22, 2008

We've all heard our country called a "melting pot" and this is a good thing - the foundation on which our country is built, but for which some groups have had to struggle to be included.

I believe our country also has become a "religious buffet" where we can pick and choose what we want to believe and everyone's belief is equal, whether they put their faith in a tree, a statue, an unproven scientific theory or some form of god. Having deep journalistic roots and being a firm supporter of the First Amendment, I would never contest anyone's right to choose their faith or share it with others, but as Christians we must be aware that our dish is not always being offered on the buffet. In fact, it is declared by many to result in indigestion of free thinking or to cause food poisoning against the pursuit of truth.

Without sounding cynical, I have to say that I am concerned about my rights being trod upon by the cries of discrimination from someone else. How do I teach my children to be strong under such pressure from every direction?

Sometimes when I hear about some new injustice against the Christian faith, I get in a panic. But then I remember that God can work in every situation. Standing up in public and getting on my knees in private will result in God being able to use me to reach others. Those who are stuffing themselves with animistic salad, soups of idolatry, the meat of academia and who are purging the Bread of Life completely from their diets.

My prayer is that my children, observing me fighting one small battle at a time, will take up the cause and invite more and more people to dine at the table with the King.

"They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen" - Romans 1:25. Although Paul wrote this about a society almost 2000 years ago, it certainly applies to our nation today!

Isaiah 7:9 warns, "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all."
