What Did You Learn in School Today?
Date Posted: August 13, 2005

I don't remember being taught much of the theory (I mean, myth) of evolution when I was in school, but it's there in force now!

Perhaps because I grew up in a small, fairly conservative town, this was not something I encountered until high school. I still didn't have much with which to refute it, but I knew it wasn't true. I did not come from a rock!

Today kids are being confronted with this in kindergarten. I know, because I work in a kindergarten classroom and curriculum from counting to weekly readers deals with dinosaurs, which the kids love. But, unfortunately, they all begin with "millions of years ago . . ." and don't offer any alternative "theory".

This is an issue I've been passionate about for many years and I hope I have taught my children and those in my church groups to know that they have arguments, scientific ones, for a young earth and an "intelligent designer", as is now the fashionable term for God the Creator.

They understand that the bible is true and that, despite what many scientists and those who parrot their theories say, there is no hard evidence for evolution. It is a theory, as it has never been observed happening and cannot be replicated in any experiment. As my favorite creation scientist, Dr. Kent Hovind, remarks, "nothing a simple as a pocket comb has ever randomly come into existence."

He offers wonderful materials, video seminars and debates on creation science and provides our youth (and us) with the information we need to stand up against these lies.

Why is this important? Because the entire idea of evolution means that we are here by chance, may or may not survive, and that it doesn't matter whether or not we exist. There is no plan, no accountability while we live, and nothing when we die.

If we believe in a God, and even call him an intelligent designer, then we must be accountable for what we do and answer to a higher authority.

Some have taken the intelligent design theory and applied it to an alien force, which they say populated our planet tens of thousands of years ago. Others say God may exist, he may have created us, but he is now hands-off and just watches to see what we'll do to each other.

These theories are lacking something that I want -- hope! My God offers hope, through salvation and eternal life. Not a you-only-go-around-once-so-grab-all-the-gusto-while-you-can proposal.

My God wrote a chronicle of how we got here and when. Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning, God --" (No spaceships, no gases floating around in space, no rocks or apes.)

We have hope through faith. Dr. Hovind gives a good example of faith in general when he speaks about one of his debates. He was debating a scientist (I use the term loosely) at a university and the man sarcastically asked if Dr. Hovind expected the students to believe that all the types of dogs we have today came from two dogs which were on Noah's ark thousands of years ago. Dr. Hovind responded that he thought that was easier than what the professor wanted them to believe -- that they all came from a rock millions of years ago!

As the kids return to school, I pray we will all be vigilant about what they are learning and make sure the truth is available to them.
