In their classes at church, my kids were given balloons and wrote on them what they loved.
My nine-year-old's balloon said "God, Jesus, parents, brother". My three-year-old was more practical. His said "candy".
Well, he was being honest, I guess. He has a habit of expressing things in the extreme. (I can't imagine where he could have learned that!) Most kids will say they love something like candy or a favorite book or T.V. show. But when it comes to something they don't care for, they tell you they don't like it.
My son will try new food or something else new, but if he finds it's not to his liking, rather than making a face and saying he doesn't like it he will politely say, "I don't love it."
How I wish I could be so decisively discerning when expressing myself. But regardless of what I love or don't love, I've been instructed who I should love. God reminds us in Luke 10:27 to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your, soul and with all your strength." and "Love your neighbor as yourself."
Seems simple enough. Next time I find myself not liking someone, I will quote this verse and remember "I do love them."
