God is Sovereign—what does that mean? When someone says that “God is sovereign”, what do you think of? Do you think of someone who is able to do what he wills and wishes without the interference of anyone? I think that is a good definition of the word. In my dry place, this was a good definition for me to have. There were many times when I realized I was powerless to do anything about my situation—I really mean ANYTHING. Before I came to an end of my resources by trying and trying and doing and doing, I had to rely on whom else--God. It is weird how that comes about. Even as a child of God and knowing the power of the God I serve, I would still end up in a daily struggle (at times) trying to deliver myself from a situation. (For those of us with children, we often don’t understand their futile efforts against large obstacles and why they won’t turn to us for help.) But then as life would have it, you inevitably get into a season when you need a deliverer—that is not you. You need God to show up himself through someone or something. Your way isn’t working and God just needs to breathe on your situation. I think these are the times where we truly learn the power of God’s plan that has been set for our lives from the beginning. When God makes a promise and follows through on it (no matter how long it takes) it makes you see just how he carefully he watches over his plan. There are plans that I undertake with good intentions and for good reasons, but I don’t follow through on them. Unfortunately they involve my kids sometimes and they are good disappointment –reminders (smile!). But God is one who finishes out every plan that he starts (see Philippians 1:6 and Jeremiah 29:11). We can rest assured that he is, as Mary says in Luke 1:49 “the Mighty One and has done great things for me”. Nothing captures God’s heart more, I believe, than for his children to trust in his promises. As a father, there is probably no higher compliment to receive from one of my children than to hear them validate something with a “Daddy says” or a “Daddy said”. They are taking the trust they have in my authority and using it to benefit themselves. I have to believe that Father God is no different. We can confidently speak to a situation about God’s awesome power and how we will not be defeated because “Daddy said”, God’s heart is warmed and our faith is increased. His sovereign power working on our behalf is more than any enemy the dry place can send our way. Our trust is in his ability not our own. We can remain in peace because our focus is on what he can and will do on our behalf (see Isaiah 26:3). So what will you resolve about the dry place you face today? Will you say that my Father has said that I am the head and not the tail, I’m above and not beneath, I will be the lender and not the borrower! (see Deuteronomy 28:1-13) What will be your confession of faith? Has God shown you his power lately? Maybe he is waiting for a chance to demonstrate it to you. Will you place your trust in him to do it for you?
