Not growing spiritually can put us in danger of falling away. There is a cliche that goes, "I have fought to a standstill, and I'm still standing still!!. With a Christian, there is always some type of "fight'. If we are truly struggling in God's will and calling for us, we will not stand still, although the pace may seem to suggest to us that we are just "standing still". Whatever time God gives us, He will use to allow us keep moving for Him, no matter where we are.
There are two dangers inherent in standing still spiritually. One, the obvious, is that we are not moving forward in the grace of time He is patiently giving us. Two, standing still long enough we could begin to just sink - becoming so comfortable with the status quo that can lead you to believe you are in the center of His will. We begin to "vegetate" as the saying goes. The eventual belief is that you are "being blessed", so why should you fight it.
There is a time to stand still. And there is a time to move forward. But it must be God who leads you into these times. Remember, God was leading Israel to stand still, and to move forward. If He leads you into a time of standing still, it is to build strength to move forward again. Standing still is never permanent, which is diametrically opposite to the will of God for you! (2 Peter 3:18)
When Israel came to the Red Sea, Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4) commanded them to stand still and watch Him as He performed a mighty miracle to deliver them from Egypt. However, being frightened and without a tried faith, they wanted to go forward. This was the human response, and is the natural response to threats to our spiritual journey out of the "Egypt" of this world. I recall a remark a church leader said to the leader of that organization when there seemed to be an insolvable emergency. His response to the crisis was "someone must DO SOMETHING!...".
In Israel's case, God wanted to prove to them his loving concern and prove His ability to deliver no matter what the situation seemed to demand. Then - again the natural human response: "The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on! (Exodus 14:15). Apparently, even after Christ had performed a great miracle, they hesitated. So we see that there is danger in both extremes - unless. Unless Christ is in your circumstances, and you are tuned in to the Holy Spirits urgings.
There are times in our lives when God may be saying "stand still" - for a while. Settle down, concentrate on Bible study, prayer, meditation. Take the time to just "be still". One of the most insidious enemies for today's Christian is the unending busyness of our world. So many demands are made from every direction, many hardly have time (they feel), to even ponder the direction and momentum of the lives.
Unless you are subjected entire to the will of Christ, it will be very difficult for your to determine accurately when to "stand still" and when to "move on". The flesh , society, and many other seen and unseen influences will cloud the truth to the point that you could mistake one for the other. Satan has a way of promoting double-mindedness (James 1:8), that creates indecision and uncertainty. Your defense? Go to God in complete openness, and submissive humility, and petition Him to give you the correct timing. As you have probably heard, time is everything. And in many ways it is.
Jesus has perfect timing for you. Will you yield to His timing for you to "stand still" - and the time to "move on", trusting Him to lead you.? If you will, you will stand still and move forward in compete confidence in your decision. From where ever you are now, you will always be growing and moving forward!.
