Have you ever wondered what the greatest sin is - with the greatest consequences?
Is it violation of one of the ten commandments? Deliberately breaking one the these commandments had great consequences for the Israelites.
Could it be deliberately refusing to love?
According to the Apostle Paul, refusing to love is a very serious sin. Love is an even greater quality than faith...and faith is VERY important quality of character. Not conduction our live in a spirit of trust and faith in God, and not living in an attitude of love is certainly very serious in God' sight. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
We can be certain that the worst sin possible is the one emphasized by Jesus Himself, and is indeed the worst sin that can be committed by anyone. This is a sin that cannot be forgiven - ever.
The greatest sin is blasphemy.
Not blasphemy against an enemy, or even a brother or sister in Christ. Ironically, this worst sin pertains to something that can be said against the Holy Spirit - the One who seals us for eternal life, and lives in us, and is to be with us forever.
If any words that can be spoken against the Holy Spirit are spoken, they will never be forgiven. Not in this life, or times to come.
All are in danger of doing so if they speak against His influence in their life. We grieve Him when we refuse to repent of sins He reveals to us. It grieves Him when we resist His conviction of our heart and mind that we have done a wrong to another, or have deliberately done what He reveal and moves us not to do, or say. Jesus warns all of us who believe in Him.
Granted that this is more likely to occur with those whom the Holy Spirit is striving with to repent and to believe in Jesus Christ. But we would all do well not to be careless in responding to the Spirit's leading and urgings.
Let all of us who believe in Jesus for our salvation, never be tempted to speak against the One who indwells us with the attributes and nature of Jesus and our heavenly Father.
Jesus warns everyone:
"Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit." - Matthew 12:31-33
