"What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of [earthborn] man that You care for him?" (Psalm 8:4). The Psalmist asked this question of God long ago. Man is still striving to answer it.
But it is certainly a valid question. It is vitally important for us to know both what and who we are. Fleshly man is generally interested in the answer to "what" he is. In general, the question of who is ignored; or is left to the religionists. We have one place only to go. The Bible. Notice the New Testament:
"It has been solemnly and earnestly said in a certain place, What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You graciously and helpfully care for and visit and look after him? For some little time You have ranked him lower than and inferior to the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor and set him over the works of Your hands, For You have put everything in subjection under his feet. Now in putting everything in subjection to man, He left nothing outside [of man's] control. But at present we do not yet see all things subjected to him [man]." - Hebrews 2:6-8 (AMP)
The Bible, through Jesus Himself speaks of us as being Body and Soul, which taken together is who we are. But what is meant by body and soul (or spirit - but not the Holy Spirit - Job 32:8; Matthew 10:28). What - and who - are they? If it were not for the soul, we would only be a "what. The "they" is really one while in the body. What happens to them when we die? What will they be throughout eternity? Will there continue to be a dual existence?
As creatures formed in God's image, we have shape (body) and a spirit (soul) which is our total inter persona, our essence, which is who we are without our body. Together they form who we are. The body without the spirit is dead (James 2:26), and is what we are without the spirit in us. Animals also have a "spirit", but is limited in many ways. Apparently their spirit cannot receive the impregnation of the Spirit of God, as humans can. As far as we know, they cannot attain immortality. The spirit in us imbued with the Spirit of God, then reshapes us into the image of Jesus Christ.
Then comes to pass what Jesus reveal in John 15. We are created in His image, then He lives in us, we live in Him, the Father lives in Jesus and us, and we live in the Father. This makes us the Father's sons and daughters, and the brothers and sister of Jesus Christ. The change that takes place in us is a "new creation". Not new in body yet - but that will come at the coming of Jesus at the resurrection when we will be clothed with a new body, knowable as the same in shape, recognizable, but of a substance that then will be a kind of immortal flesh. But, we cannot know as yet exactly with that will be like, as John tells us.
We will possess basically the same personality. A personality without the capacity to sin in any way. Apparently our body will possess a flesh-like quality, but without the quality that permits decay and aging. Finally, thel project of God is complete.
Who are you?
Relatively speaking, that is not nearly as important as who you can become... the son or daughter of the eternal God.
Surrender to Him, and let Him remake you into one who can live forever with Him!
"Beloved, we are [even here and] now God's children; it is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be [hereafter], but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall [[b]as God's children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him [c]just as He [really] is. And everyone who has this hope [resting] on Him cleanses (purifies) himself just as He is pure (chaste, undefiled, guiltless)." - 1 John 3:2-3 (AMP)
