Without Excuse
Date Posted: September 8, 2019

“For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20 NET)

Someone is our Maker. There cannot be something that exist without a first cause, regardless of attempts of some to wiggle around it. That first cause is an almighty God. Because He is our Maker, he loves what He has made. We as the pinnacle of what He has made are His primary interest, but He has filled His Word with assurances that He loves, protects, provides for everything He has made. Some of those things are so infinitely small - some are infinitely big.

A few years ago, a TV special showed experiments with the principal of infinity - infinity of smallness. There are the two infinities. The largest and the smallest. To accomplish the experiment of infinite smallness, the question was asked as to how many times something can be divided in half. As far as this writer knows, the process is still running. The atom is very large compared to the times its components can be divided. Infinity is infinity. Only an infinite God can know the limits of infinity. Even to define infinity is a practical impossibility. It is indefinable. The other exponent of infinite smallness is how big can the biggest be - such as how big is outer space that we refer to as the universe. It is infinite. In order to comfort the inquiring mind, some are now speculating that there may be parallel universes. This is no solution because there could be an infinity of parallel universes.

It would seem that those gifted (by the God of the universe) with brilliant minds capable of searching the infinities have the least excuse - they are facing much more evidence than most. Those involved in Astronomy may have the least excuse of all if they do not acknowledge the Maker of the things they are discovering. With each passing day, more astounding observations are seen. As the scripture describes it, "in seeing they do not see". The problem of not seeing by seeing isn't confined to astronomy. With every passing moment, God gives more and more witness to His existence, His power, His love, and His authority. But again - none are so blind as those who will not see (Romans 1:19-22). Regardless, everyone can see enough to be without excuse. Jesus said that even a flower is much more glorious that Solomon in all his splendor (Matthew 5:29). Who then can dismiss or ignore even the smallest things (Zechariah 4:10)?

It is not only the most brilliant minds of scientist and astronomers that are without excuse. For some God just does not seem real enough, or the idea that a human can live forever is just, as the saying goes, "too much. There are some who excuse themselves by claiming that no one or no other thing has the right over their existence. It is actually very simple. It is simple, but not simplistic. God's plan of salvation for those made in His image is a very straight forward, singular and simple issue - He made us for His own reasons and for His own purpose. He is our Maker. Therefore, He has all rights to that which He has made. If we do not agree with His purpose, His projects, that does not nullify His rights as our Maker. He retains ownership and proprietary rights to make whatever disposition of that which He has made as it pleases Him.

So we are without excuse because of the witness by what God has created - the God who created even the infinite.

We may feel that we are doing as we please. However, everything is by His permission only, as our Creator and Maker. When considered direct and point blank, the Gospel is amazingly simple (2 Corinthians 11:3). Because He is our Maker, he loves what He has made. He wants to keep on loving what He has made and is making. He loves humanity so much that He wants to have us around forever so He can love us even more through eternity. When that happens it becomes reciprocal - the more we are loved, the more we love God. And it goes on exponentially - just like the experiments with infinity. God the Father, our Savior Jesus the Christ, the Holy Spirit will love and be loved infinitely by those who accept His plan. The key to that plan is His Son, the Christ, and His name as a man was Jesus.

Jesus is the pivotal reason we are without excuse (1 John 1:2).

The record of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection is so well verified, even by the unbelieving world, that it seems redundant to repeat it. The Bible, the inspired record, is the most comprehensive. According to God the Father’s times, Jesus became the final key that unlocks the earthly prison of mankind (Lamentations 3:31-34). Not retaining God as the umbrella of knowledge leads to every kind of depravity, retrogression, and evil imaginable. It all begins by not keeping God as the reference point for all things (Romans 1:28-31). But God in Christ loved us so much, He bought us back out of the slavery we had sold ourselves into. Now all may be set free - free from enslavement to sin which brings upon mankind everything we can call bad. Free from death, and even the fear of death which, without realizing it, fills mankind’s subconscious with fear of dying (Hebrews 2:3).

With so much evidence - and so much more than referred to here - all are without excuse.

On the day that we all stand before our Maker, Designer, Provider, and Savior, if we have not believed, what will be our excuse?

What will be yours?...

“...for this is the testimony of God, even the witness which He has borne regarding His Son. He who believes in the Son of God [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] has the testimony [possesses this divine attestation] within himself. He who does not believe God [in this way] has made Him out to be and represented Him as a liar, because he has not believed (put his faith in, adhered to, and relied on) the evidence (the testimony) that God has borne regarding His Son. And this is that testimony (that evidence): God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who possesses the Son has that life; he who does not possess the Son of God does not have that life.” - 1 John 5:9-12 (AB)
