Story:
“Sodom and Gomorrah”
Application:
Friendship with the world is dangerous.
Summary:
Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities full of wickedness. Lot chose to live in Sodom when he and Abraham separated. God said He would destroy these cities because the wicked people were a danger to everybody around. God sent two angels to warn Lot and his family. The wicked men of Sodom wanted the two angels for themselves so the angels blinded the evil men. The angels helped Lot, his wife, and two daughters leave Sodom. They were told to hurry and not to look behind them. Lot’s wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt. God sent fire and brimstone out of heaven to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, as Braham looked from he was in the distance and watched the smoke. All the wicked in the two cities were destroyed except Lot and his two daughters. The entire area became a wilderness and is not the Dead Sea.
Focus:
That our children realize they cannot make friendship with the world, nor hang out with people abiding in sin, because it will taint them. They must choose to walk according to God’s way.
Finding Christ:
Abraham is a type of Christ interceding on behalf of the righteous that judgment and wrath might not come upon them. We see Sodom and Gomorrah representing the sin in our lives that we are to flee and not look back lest we turn into a pillar of salt. A pillar of salt has been suggested to represent several things including the weight of a pillar makes it immovable, useless. Also salt was poison to fertile ground, to show that ground would never bear fruit again. So when we look back (desire) our sinful life, we become infertile and useless.
Live the Lesson:
Time to take a 2 liter bottle of diet lemon lime soda (diet will be much easier to clean up and won’t attract ants like regular sodas) and make a new label for it that clearly exhibits the words The World (sin, evil, etc). Now take a package of Mentos (candy) and tell your children that the mentos represent their friends that are living in the world and abiding in sin. Roll up a paper tube with all the candies in it so they will easily all slide out into the bottle of pop. Tell them that God warns us that bad company corrupts good morals. God tells us that Friendship with the World is hostility towards God and you become His enemy. So now step outside with your children and ask them if they want to hang out with their friends (the mentos) at the World (the 2 liter bottle of soda) or turn away and move far back from them?
Now remove the lid from the 2 liter of soda and quickly slide in the entire package of mentos and then RUN, RUN away quickly. Watch the explosion from a distance. Explain to your children that even if they think they are avoiding the world, if they hang out with ungodly friends (the mentos) they would end up with the world on them, as it explodes with its sinfulness. You cannot play with evil and not get burned.
Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve! As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please help us to choose to abide in You. Help us to forsake the world and leave behind the ungodliness. Please give us hearts that choose NOT to look back.

This week give your children examples of what friendship with the world is. Explain to them how bad company corrupts good morals.
