Ask, Seek, Knock

“Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will open.

Matthew 7:7 (NIV)

ASK

When we have a need and we approach someone as we seek help from him or her, how do we bring up the need? Do we use force and demand that need be met? It doesn’t work like that. We have to ask. When I was a child, there was a saying. “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” I didn’t fully understand the meaning until I became an adult. We will be received better when we present our needs as requests.

When a young man decides he wants to marry the young woman he has been seeing, he presents his thoughts and feelings about her and tells her how he wants to spend his life with her. The man always ends his speech by asking, “Will you marry me?” He asks.

This applies to how we approach God. If we go before Him demanding that we be given what we think we need, He may consider us ill-mannered, lay our request aside, and teach us what He sees we need to learn.

SEEK

Did you ever play “Hide and Seek” as a child? Maybe you called it “Hide and Go Seek.” Someone was “it”, aka; the seeker. Everyone else ran and hid while the seeker counted to one hundred. Then “it” would begin to search for the others. The object of the game was for the hiders to get back to “home” without getting caught.

In our Christian experience, we sometimes have to seek certain qualities for our lives. People plagued with troublesome issues have to find peace in order to continue their walk with Christ.

We have times when we have to learn patience in order to progress through difficult steps as we await the outcome of certain events. Achieving patience can take a considerable amount of time.

It is important for each of us to pursue peace when we face harsh issues because, if we don’t find God’s peace, those issues can cause gnaw on us from the inside.

KNOCK

When we visit someone, we knock on their door to let him or her know we are there, seeking admission. We wait while they come to the door, open it and invite us into their home. At one time I read a book on visitation, specifically hospital visitation. The author stressed the importance of a person who is visiting someone a hospital to knock on the room of a patient The rationale behind this action is this is likened to the patient’s home and we wouldn’t go into his or her home without knocking. I believe it is also polite for the visitor to ask if he or she may enter the patient’s room.

When we approach the Lord as we seek salvation, we whisper His name. As we approach God in prayer, we call out His name. In a way, we are knocking on Heaven’s door each time we call out to Him.

What are we seeking as we go through life here in the 21Century? What do you and I seek each day of this year?

The answer to the first question comes easily to Christians: we seek Christ and all He has to offer-eternal life with Him, peace, some comfort and His blessings. The answer to the second question is harder to state because, in order to arrive at a response we have to look at ourselves individually and weigh our character and integrity against that of God.
