Do You Have His Number?
Date Posted: September 1, 2010

I have a few prized possessions, and one of them is my Maui Jim Sunglasses. If you are not familiar with Maui Jim glasses let me tell you that they are in a class by themselves. The price tags attached to these glasses communicate just that. However, after having detached retinas in both of my eyes some years back my husband felt it was necessary that I own a pair of these pricey sunglasses. That’s when he made the purchase for me. I have treasured my $250 gift ever since then, and have been very careful not to lose them, until…

Recently we were visiting our daughter in South Carolina when I went with her to her dentist appointment. When it was time to leave I reached in my purse to grab my prized possession and discovered that they were not there. “No problem”, I thought. I had them when I arrived, so they are somewhere in the dentist office. So the search began, only to come up empty handed. We then explained to the receptionist about my missing sunglasses and gave her my name and number in case they would somehow show up. When I returned to Michigan without my Maui Jim’s my eyes were definitely protesting.

Then a miracle happened about a week after I got home. I received a phone call from the dentist office saying that a young man just came into their office with my Maui Jim’s in hand. He offered very little information as he handed over my much loved glasses to the receptionist.

After I got this call, I excitedly began relaying this information to my husband, when I noticed a big smile on his face. It was then that he confessed to me that he recently prayed that if the glasses were stolen, that God would prick the conscience of the person who took them, and make the conviction so unbearable that they would have to return them. I have to admit it never crossed my mind to pray for such a thing. But there I sat getting ready to get Maui Jim’s back because my husband prayed.

Recently it was suggested to someone that they pray about something. Immediately the response was, “Why? It doesn’t work anyways!” So why do some people value prayer while others feel that it is a waste of their time? Could the answer lie in the connection?

If I picked up my telephone and just began speaking into it, would anyone hear my words? The answer is no, because a very important step was skipped. No connection was made. For the connection is the key element in any communication. Even if I dialed a number, but it was the wrong number, the same holds true.

Therefore if you find yourself thinking prayer is useless, maybe you never took the time to make sure that you are really connected to God. This is done by confessing with your mouth that God’s Son, Jesus, is Lord, and believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead. (Romans 10:9)

So if anyone tells you that you can get connected to God in many different ways─DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! They are giving you a wrong number and you will never be able to make the connection that you truly deserve.

So the next time you feel that praying is a waste of your time, ask yourself, “Do I really have His number?”

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6
