Missing the Mark
Date Posted: December 1, 2010

It was suppose to be a short trip to the store and back when “whamo”, something hit our car from out of nowhere. Immediately my husband pulled over to the side of the road, when he spotted the little culprit─a golf ball. And sure enough, on the driver’s side of the car just below the window was the mark it left from its impact─a big ole’ dent.

Since the street that we were driving on was lined with trees, we were not even aware that we were close to a golf course. However, on the other side of the street about 200 yards away from us, we spotted three men in a golf cart.

“Excuse me sirs” Kirk said to them as he approached them with ball in hand. “Are you missing something?” The guilty gentleman looked sheepishly at Kirk when my husband said, “If it’s a golf ball, I just found it.”

Shocked and somewhat bewildered all three golfers was amazed that a golf ball that was suppose to have landed in front of them, some way made a wrong turn and went flying in the opposite direction heading right for the 2010 Rav 4 that was traveling down the road. How thankful we are that the impact was not 6 inches higher which could have broken the side window and possibly knocked Kirk out.

After getting all the gentlemen’s information, Kirk remarked that the chance of this happening is a million to one. The golfer disagreed saying, “No, this is more like four million to one.” Anyway, we were all in agreement that this was so bizarre that it probably could not be done again…even if the guy tried.

This incident got me thinking. How many of us are aiming for something in life, and somehow and someway end up in a completely different place than where we intended, and we find ourselves asking, “How did we get here?” However, the great thing about life is that there is always a second chance. We don’t have to stay in one place too long.

However, there is a mark that we all should be aiming at, and that mark is making sure we get to heaven when we die. If you miss this mark, there are no second chances.

As I look around in today’s world I am grieved that so many are missing this mark and don’t even care. They think that this life is all about money and success and getting ahead no matter what the cost. However, Jesus said, “What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? (Matthew 16:26 NLT)

All of us are in this game of life. It’s not only important how we play this game but where we end up when the game is over. Please don’t be so ignorant and think you have plenty of time ahead that there is no need to worry about your eternity. For you could end up like Vince Lombardi who tried to sugarcoat one of his losses when he said, “We didn’t lose the game; we just ran out of time.” I don’t care how you word it, Mr. Lombardi you still lost.

If you are lost, you can be found…call on Jesus today and settle where you will spend your eternity while you still have the chance. It’s a mark that you do not want to miss!
