In the Word

Who Is He?

Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, "Truly this is the Prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ."

But some said, "Will the Christ come out of Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?" So there was a division among the people because of Him. Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. John 7:40-44 NKJV

Some in the crowd listened to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and agreed with Him that Jesus was the Christ. Others rejected what was obvious and attempted to justify their unbelief by saying Jesus didn’t meet all the prerequisites of the Messiah.

When we rely on what we think we know and not on what the Spirit clearly says, we are in a dangerous position. Paul tells a truly sad tale in the first chapter of Romans:

Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.” Romans 1:21-23 NKJV

If we refuse to listen to what God clearly says, our hearts become hardened to His voice, our minds lose the ability to discern the truth from lies, and our souls become destined to fuel the fires of hell. “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
