Good Intentions

Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. But the Lord said to my father David, “Whereas it was in your heart to build a temple for My name, you did well in that it was in your heart. Nevertheless you shall not build the temple, but your son who will come from your body, he shall build the temple for my name” (2 Chronicles 6:7-9 NKJV).

David had a dream -- to build the temple for the name of the Lord. It was a noble dream, and in fact it pleased the Lord that David had such a dream. God commended him for the dream, which indicates it was a dream that was pure.

But David’s dream was off the mark. It was close, in that the dream was to be fulfilled through his son, rather than through David himself.

As I read the above passage of Scripture, I was reminded of my tendency to get an idea, and to get excited about the idea, and to go for it, without waiting for God’s approval and confirmation.

What about you? When an idea pops into your head, do you immediately assume that it’s from God and go for it? Or do you wait and seek guidance and confirmation from God and others before going full speed ahead?

God gives us dreams and He has great things He wants us to do for Him, so don’t immediately dismiss the ideas that pop into your head. But do take the time to seek Him to determine whether or not the dream is from Him, and whether or not He wants to accomplish that particular thing through you.

Lord, I thank You that You give us dreams. I thank You that you have great plans for our lives. Help us to follow You and Your lead as we seek to determine which dreams to pursue. -- Amen.

Reflection:

Have you sought God’s guidance and confirmation regarding your dreams? If you’re unsure about whether or not your dreams are from God, ask Him to confirm them. Look for His answers in your daily Bible reading and through the counsel of others.
