This weekend I realized all of my close friends are Christians, at least the ones I hang out with on a regular basis. As my pastor describes his childhood, everyone was either a Christian or a not so good Christian (paraphrasing here). That is how my social circle has become, which seems like a good thing - but it is not.
This weekend, I spent time in “the world” -- physically, conversationally, mentally, and spiritually. I forgot crucial survival skills - like going back to school after several years. Times change along with customs, patterns, mores, society.
Just like we do not understand why our parent did not like us associating with the ‘troublemakers’ in school, I think we miss the point of why Jesus asks certain things from us. He doesn’t just want us to go into the world to share Him with others, He also wants us to develop and maintain a strong resistance to the enemy’s ways.
Christians should influence the world without being negatively influenced by the world...
As the Lord says in
Jeremiah 15:19b;
If you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you but you must not turn to them.
