When Jesus is eight days old, it is time to circumcise Him, and Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Might this occasion be unfamiliar to many, even although it is only one week after angels appeared to shepherds?

There are not many carols, or illustrations on cards, about this day. Why?

This scene is a very Jewish aspect of the birth of Jesus, but it has a meaningful message.

God had said that this should be done, and Mary and Joseph obey, without questioning.

They did what God told them to do, and Jesus received a mark, which would never be…  ( Click for more )

The arch fiend dazzled this couple in Eden’s parkland, with false light.

“Where are you?” is quickly followed in Genesis by “Who told you that you were naked?”

Devotional study guides can be challenging. It is interesting which daily Bible reading notes a pastor provides for his people.

“Who told you?” The source of our information is crucial.

What we hear, and go on to believe and accept, can colour and direct the remainder of our lives.

When that empowered and anointed apostle, Paul, wrote to disciples of Jesus Christ,…  ( Click for more )

Can you say that sort of irresponsible thing today, when so many people are concerned about being ‘politically correct’?

Are you allowed to broadcast such comments, when presenting the Radio 4 ‘flagship’ programme “Today”, and without anyone there to give another possible point of view?

Is it in order to challenge someone’s beliefs, and not offer an opportunity to reply?

John Humphrys, while interviewing two scientists on their research last week, dismissed those out there who continue to believe in Creation, as ‘bonkers’. …  ( Click for more )

Protocol is a word we hear more and more of, and it appears to be used in various scenarios.

There is a particular protocol, in walking with God, over the years. It is not something that is achieved any old way we want.

When servants of God have understood what is involved, a rich and rewarding fellowship ensues.

Enoch was a man who walked with God and kept in the centre of His will. As he communed with Almighty God, the living God communed with him. Enoch knew only too well what would happen when his son died.

In the life of every man, who experienced that deep…  ( Click for more )

Joseph! Quickly, wake up. Get up. Take the child, Jesus, and Mary His mother, and escape to Egypt.

Hurry! Move fast, and stay in Egypt until you receive further instructions. Why? I'll tell you.

Joseph, Herod is about to order a search for this Child. His aim is to kill Him.

When The Wise Men came to worship Jesus and present their gifts, they had already called upon Herod in Jerusalem. There, they enquired about where the Child was, who had been born King of the Jews.

Herod is livid and furious. He is about to issue an order that all the boys who are two…  ( Click for more )

When certain specific questions arise from various sources, that can be a sign of an issue which is currently important, in the life of an individual, or in the lives of many individuals.

One of the first questions to be raised in the Bible was, “Where are you?”

Having sinned by disobeying God, this man and woman are trying to hide from Almighty God.

They are afraid, ashamed, guilty, separated from God, and what had been pure and innocent and beautiful was now marred and broken, but God in His grace is offering this opportunity to sort things out and to remedy…  ( Click for more )

When Almighty God does not do what we want, what are we to do?

How are we to pray, and go on praying?

These are not easy circumstances in which to find yourself. They never have been. They never will be.

One aspect of faith is having that deep conviction that God knows more than we do, and that He will see us through.

Disappointment is the result of unmet expectations. There comes that moment when we refuse to panic, and decide to be patient.

Faith in Jesus Christ reassures us that God is in control.

The Psalmist asked, “Why am I discouraged, downcast…  ( Click for more )

Everything has its price, and we just have to pay, irrespective of the circumstances.

Well, that may be true in most instances, but it is certainly not true when it comes to faith in Jesus Christ.

There is an invitation to all who are thirsty to come to the waters and drink, and if you have no money you can still come and buy and eat.

For what Almighty God offers, you do not need money.

God makes it so simple. He makes it so easy, and yet, man battles with this.

Would some like it to be made harder, or more difficult, so that in one sense they could say they…  ( Click for more )

A missionary came home from an overseas field, having been away for five years, and spoke, describing how he had led one man to faith in Jesus Christ, but only one man. The Chairman announced at the close of that ‘Missionary Evening’ that he would rather have been able to do that, than write all the best books in the world.

Missionary, be comforted!

Missionary, be encouraged!

This world is blundering on in a morass of sin and sorrow and sadness and suffering. Here and there, there are lights shining in the darkness, and, please God, may we be one of these…  ( Click for more )

Ancient advice applies as much today as it did then.

There is a man, one man, trying to settle all the arguments among his people. He is an important man doing a vital work.

We would call it shepherding, counselling, coaching or mentoring. This is nothing new.

He was taking on far too much and he was not aware of it, but his father-in-law saw what was happening, and pointed it out.

Moses was prepared to listen and learn from others.

He is encouraged to teach the people the Word of God and the principles which God reveals.

Show people the way to live, and the…  ( Click for more )

Some Christians can be regarded as being a bit extreme, but it all depends upon one’s viewpoint.

In a day when many are wandering, or drifting, and even falling away, being extreme is not easy to define.

When it comes to spiritual commitment, many have discovered that there are probably only three basic problems.

Be regular at worship and participate willingly with sincerity and joy, and not simply out of duty.

Obedience to Jesus Christ and His word can speedily resolve various serious issues.

Giving, and serving, as God’s word guides deals with many…  ( Click for more )

Is there nothing our coalition Government can do to intercept and stop the returning obscene bonuses of bankers, and others, and channel these monies to the nurses and police?

In times of war, emergency measures have been introduced and legislation speedily passed.

Our present chaotic crisis is the consequence of reckless greed, and selfish mismanagement, with perhaps even a touch of pride at the dubious, but damaging, ‘success’.

Know, and remember, that Jesus Christ spoke about money more than any other one subject, because money speaks so much about us. He…  ( Click for more )

Walking past the Temple on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus Christ draws His disciples’ attention to the impressive gates. On these doors were two large clusters of grapes, more than six feet high and made of gold.

This was the symbol of Israel taken from the days, when under the leadership of Moses, the spies returned from the Promised Land – a phrase we seldom hear today.

It remains the logo on all Israeli Tourist Board literature.

Israel was called to be the fruitful planting of God, bringing all nations of the world to Almighty God.

Time out to deal with the massive financial problems confronting our nation is likely to be lengthy and painful and will inevitably mean suffering, worry, deep disruption and sadness. We await the details following months of pretty clear warnings.

Some people have to take time out in an effort to unravel problems that might never have arisen had time been taken to listen to what Almighty God has to say regarding various issues.

Around the time when Daniel was a young man, a nation thought they could just live as they chose, without a thought of the consequences. Their timeout…  ( Click for more )

The political conference season draws to a close. What might the reaction be if one speaker arose to say, “You know, we are in a mess, and we deserve to be in a mess. It is time to turn to Almighty God and ask for mercy, help, and guidance.”

One outstanding leader did exactly that. He saw the serious condition of the people. He realised the cause of the suffering, and discerned, that as nation, “we are getting what we deserve!” Why?

God had been so good to people, providing them with everything. When they started going wrong God gave them verbal and…  ( Click for more )

Our God, the God and Father of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ, is a God who speaks. Our living God had spoken through the prophets many times, and in various ways, but there came that moment when He spoke to men through His Son, Jesus.

Jesus is God’s last word to the world. The final vital word God had to speak, He spoke it, in Jesus, and through Jesus.

God’s word is not just something you hear. It is someone you see.

An amazing letter was written to Hebrew disciples of Jesus. Today, these disciples would be called Messianic Jews. The letters of Peter and…  ( Click for more )

This is a highly important matter we have to see to and attend to.

Do not miss the grace of God. How can anyone willingly miss out on, or avoid, the grace and love and mercy of Almighty God? Yet many do, and do so deliberately.

There are times when God makes something available to us, and it is something of His mercy, or His grace, or something of His power, and we might never have that opportunity again, or be in that situation where we can make a specific positive decision.

There may be a decision which you have to make today, or over these next few days, and this is…  ( Click for more )

The aircraft was just about to be pushed back prior to taxiing, when a young boy threw a tantrum, shouting and screaming and kicking the seat in front.

After a couple of minutes a Marine unfastened his seat belt, arose and walked forward, and bending over, whispered in the little fellow’s ear.

He froze.

Returning to his seat a lady stopped the marine and asked, “Soldier, please can you share with me the magic words you used?”

“Ma’am, I certainly can. I simply said, ‘Do you see these pips on my shoulder? Do you see these bands on…  ( Click for more )

Ramadan, observed throughout the Islamic world, is drawing to a close.

Over these past weeks thousands of disciples of Jesus Christ have been praying specifically for the Muslim world using an excellent informative booklet, “Loving Muslims through Prayer”.

These thirty days of prayer has been a time when Christians pray for God's sovereign intervention in the lives of Moslems during this month of the year when Moslems are particularly religious.

Those participating are encouraged to pray for Muslim friends and acquaintances.

“How can I forgive myself?” That is said by more people, and more often, than many of us would like to admit.

These words are often uttered. “I just cannot forgive myself when I remember what I did, and the memory of that continues to haunt me.”

“Years ago, I said something that was really nasty and hurtful and spiteful and every now and again it stabs and pains my heart.”

It is true. We cannot forgive ourselves, but what we might have said or done can be dealt with, and forgiven.

Only Jesus Christ, the Son of God, can forgive. …  ( Click for more )

‘Time to think about Our Greatest Need’ was the title of a leaflet handed out in Inverness.

What is our greatest need in these critical times? Life would be much easier, if only our greatest need could be met.

That need, although important, may be short term, if we are short sighted.

Where does God fit in? What does He think about me? Will I have to face Him one day and give an account of my life?

The old Catechism spoke of how we are to fear, or reverence, or glorify God, and enjoy Him forever. We are to please our creator God, and not just ourselves. …  ( Click for more )

Caleb, along with Joshua, under the leadership of Moses, waited forty years to get out of the wilderness, and it was not their fault they were in the wilderness all this time. Caleb and Joshua were rewarded.

It always pays to wait patiently, no matter how hard it might appear at the time, and waiting for forty years is one long wait.

The disciples of Jesus had to wait patiently until Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit.

Waiting is seldom easy.

Hard times can test people in an inspiringly positive way, whilst others are paralysed when faced with the wilderness.

Around 1,500 years ago the church introduced this season called Advent, for various reasons.

Many regarded Advent as a time of spiritual preparation, remembering the birth of Jesus Christ, as others prepared for Epiphany or the manifestation of Christ, whilst some recalled that Jesus Christ was returning and coming again. All aspects are important.

Advent means the glory of the coming of the Lord Jesus, implying the breaking through of the divine into human history – the supernatural into the natural.

It involves something great impending from the side of heaven. …  ( Click for more )

Most names have significant meaning.

Caleb was one of the twelve Israeli leaders sent by Moses to spy out the Promised Land. In the Hebrew, Caleb means dog.

Throughout the Middle East dogs are not highly esteemed. People throw stones at them.

Caleb and Joshua and ten others spied out the land. Moses wanted to know if the people were strong or weak, and if the cities were fortified or unwalled.

The twelve returned and ten brought a negative report, although they carried back a huge cluster of grapes on a pole, which remains the symbol of the Israeli Tourist Board today. …  ( Click for more )

Two men met down at the beach. They were walking their dogs.

After a few minutes conversation, one man who had a fairly young dog asked his friend if he would like to see the new trick it could do, and the friend was really interested.

The man took a big stick and threw it spinning out over the water. The dog went after the stick, running across the top of the water, fetched it, and brought it back to his master.

As his friend appeared puzzled, the man took the stick and hurled it once more out to sea and off went the dog, running over the water to fetch the stick for…  ( Click for more )
