Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life
Devotional: January 30th
Life is great, isn't it? Evening comes, work is done, and we sit back in our easy chair and watch a little something on the telly. We grab this device with rows of buttons on its top side and start pushing buttons until we achieve the desired result. What were our ancestors thinking making televisions without remote controls?
Consider this. Since the 1950's, just after TV's invention and coming of age, America has grown obese and more sedate according to recent studies. Guess there was something to having to get up off the couch to turn the TV on and off and change channels. Who knew that walking ten feet several times a day meant the difference between obesity and fitness?
Seriously, the remote has revolutionized TV watching. Now, when we "settle in" for the evening we really do settle in. That little gadget that has its place of honor next to the Lord of the Manor's chair commands the airways and brings entertainment, news and sports into living rooms and family rooms everywhere. But what has it done to Christians?
So many of us have gotten use to having things our way in our homes we call our castles. We take so much for granted. The TV obeys us from long range and we have a cordless phone sitting next to us to handle calls. The world is ours to command. And that's frightening. Somewhere in that mix is our attitude toward the Lord. If we want something we just click the old prayer line or pick up the old prayer phone and then wait for Him to oblige. If He doesn't, then we start pointing fingers and complaining...about God.
"When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in Secret will reward you openly. When you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think they will be heard for their many words. Therefore, do not be like them. Your Father knows the things you truly need before you ask Him." Matthew 6:6-8 God is not a program we command. God is a loving Father who gives as we have need and He is in control.
