Devotional: January 5th

I can remember years ago going to my friend's house and seeing their heating stove sitting in the front room of their house. Clearly seen on the front of the stove were the words, "Warm Morning". Over the years I have come to appreciate those stoves as being dependable and true to their name. My wife and I even had one at one of the homes we have rented over the years. We had a lot of warm mornings from our Warm Morning.

You can imagine the shock we had then this past Saturday morning when we awoke to temperatures outside that were below zero with an indoor temperature of 57 degrees. The temperature in our new house just kept steadily dropping until it hit 53 degrees. Something wasn't right. All I could think was, "If I had a Warm Morning sitting in my living room we would be warm right now.

When efforts to warm up the house went unrewarded we called our builder. Our house has a one year warranty and the furnace is covered in that warranty. He sent a man immediately to get us back into heat. Curious as I am, and having worked with a man in plumbing and heating, I was interested to see what caused the problem so I followed him into the attic where the furnace was to be found.

When he removed the cover from the guts of the inner works of the furnace I asked, "Why are those two wires just sticking up?" He looked at me and said, "Those two wires are why you don't have heat. They are the leads that tell the furnace to heat the air. When they're not connected they do absolutely nothing and you get no heat." He reconnected the wires and we almost immediately could feel the difference. The temperature climbed back up to where it belonged. All because the proper connection was restored.

Restoring the proper connection is important. Many people feel detached from God. They don't feel connected. Yet, when asked what they are doing about it they seem confused. When probed about their spiritual life they all seem to have one thing in common; they have stopped praying. Prayer is the one thing that, when absent, leads to a disconnected feeling with God. God cannot communicate effectively with us if He does not have our ear.

"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God." Romans 8:26, 27 God wants us to reconnect, but we have to make the call to Him to do so. The call is made when we pray. We are reconnected and our hearts are warm again in our Father's house.
