Devotional: February 11th

If you have ever watched Saturday morning cartoons I am sure that somewhere along the way you have seen the Road Runner. He was one of my favorites when I used to watch them years ago. Then I introduced my children to the Road Runner and they watched him also until such things as Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles and He-Man came along.

The crazy thing is, just about every Road Runner cartoon was the same. His nemesis was a persistent and creative critter named Wile E. Coyote. It seems that his plight in life, his sole object for living, is to catch the Road Runner. Usually the cartoon opens with Wile E. chasing the speedy desert chicken on his own strength. Then, (isn't that a cool word...it lets you know something remarkable is about to take place) the Road Runner sticks out his tongue, says his "Beep Beep" and speeds away in a cloud of dust.

This is where Wile E. suddenly realizes, as the dust settles, that he is now standing in thin air over a chasm several hundred feet deep. We get to watch him fall all the way to the bottom where the dust cloud signals his impact. Yet he lives! And devises another way to catch his supersonic prey. It seems that the ACME Manufacturing Company never runs out of gadgets for him to try in his quest for the Road Runner.

Each subsequent effort leads to disaster. He plows into a ledge at subsonic speed. He can't seem to stop his now super-powered leg muscles. And of course, he again goes flying into the chasm. But he is never defeated. He maintains his purpose We have a wonderful promise in the Word of God. If we maintain our purpose we can be a lot like Wile E. Coyote. It is our purpose to share the Gospel.

"We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed -- always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life os Jesus may also be manifested in our body." 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 As long as our purpose is to show the world the life of Jesus the Christ, we may "hit a wall", "be attacked", "be pressed", but we live and bounce back for the cause of Christ.
