Devotional: March 19th

When I was a child playing Little League Baseball I can remember our coach at the end of each practice. He would take a ball and throw it as high and straight up in the air as he could for each one of us to catch. He was helping us to practice catching pop-ups. The pop-up is one of the trickiest plays to make in baseball. And now, thanks to the world wide web, it has become one of the trickiest plays to make while online.

Pop-ups are an aggrevation. You do know what a pop-up is? It is one of those advertisements which suddenly intrudes right in the middle of your session as you are typing in information or just about to complete a screen change. They're called pop-ups because they just suddenly pop up on your screen. You can either deftly eliminate them or find software that mostly prevents them from occurring.

My question is, why doesn't the Internet Service Provider (isp) eliminate them altogether or at leat afford their users the option of not having to mess with them? Duh!!! I know the answer to that. The people who put those pop-ups there have paid the isp a fee for advertising that gives them the right to put them there. Pop-ups are inescapable nuisances that we must learn to deal with if we are to navigate the internet.

Ever have annoying things happen to you in life? They suddenly appear without warning like a fifth cousin that just remembered your address and the fact that once, years ago, you said, "Come see us sometime." There are events that happen in our life overnight that are unwelcome intrusions. They are the pop-ups, the pop-ins, the pop-overs, the pop-outs. How we handle them can leave us either exhausted or refreshed.

Consider this. Deal with them as a child would. Don't get flustered. Don't ask, "Why me?" "Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes arrogant. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me." Psalms 131:1, 2 Remember who carries you.
