When television programs run their course and finally go the way of Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith, et. al., people mourn their passing like they would a good friend. A number of sitcoms have, or are preparing to, exit the television scene. A number of them I have only seen maybe once or twice and couldn't tell you more than the main character or one of the main characters, such is my interest.
Seinfeld is one such program. I know Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. But I couldn't recount a particular episode if my life depended on it. I watched maybe three episodes and have no idea what those were now. What I do remember is how the show was billed. Every sitcom has a point that is supposedly revealed in the title. Seinfeld was billed as "a show about nothing."
Most programs will try to prick the public conscience about certain social issues. Will and Grace tries to peddle homosexuality while Designing Women hawked the issue of women's rights. But Seinfeld is the self-professed show about nothing. The three or so episodes I saw reinforced that concept. The main characters had no common thread in the story line other than they knew each other.
Then we have "The Greatest Story Ever Told." It is a story that keeps being rewritten year after year with the same remarkable story line being pursued except by a different cast of characters than before. Surprisingly, the new characters wind up being involved in the same problems as their predecessors and even accept the same solution to their problems from the main character.
The main character is Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. The generations of man are the recurring characters who keep repeating the problems of each preceding generation. And Jesus keeps saving them from their sin generation after generation. Unlike Seinfeld this is a story about something. It is the thread of the love of God being woven throughout the lives of His creation by His Son, Jesus. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 That's something.
