Devotional: July 28th

Does size matter? I hadn't really thought much about that until yesterday morning. I had left at my usual time to head up to the Lock N Key, a coffee shop in downtown Georgetown. As I came out to the light at the end of Champion Way I got into the right turn lane. I was behind a couple of trucks; an SUV and a pickup that was in front. The pickup truck did not have a turn signal on and was just sitting at the light even though no traffic was approaching. I wondered if he had planned to go straight and had gotten in the wrong lane.

When the light turned green the pickup turned right onto Cherry Blossom Way. So, we have a man who has no clue what the little lever is for on the steering column and no concept of right on red. I followed him up Cherry Blossom until we neared the right turn lane for the main artery that goes through downtown Georgetown. I slipped into the right lane and continued toward the intersection to turn right and head downtown.

I had pulled almost even with the pickup when the driver started bringing the truck over into the right turn lane. No turn signal, no worry about the turn lane being occupied; it was time to go right. I laid on my horn for a long blast and then hit my brakes as he just continued to come on over into the lane. I followed him to the next light and had decided that I was going to turn right and go downtown the back way. As I pulled beside the pickup and turned right the driver blew his horn at me. I just shook my head and drove on downtown.

As I reached a parking place on Main Street I saw my friend in the pickup approaching the light at the intersection. He slowed down dramatically and started rolling down his window as I readied myself to get out of my car. I thought, "This is great. I'm going to be chewed out by a guy who doesn't use his turn signals, has no idea what right on red means and never looks in his side view mirror before changing lanes. This should be good." As I got out of the car and rose to my full six feet two inches and two hundred fifty-five pounds, the man rolled up the window and sped on through the light as it had just turned red. Size does matter.

So how big is the love of God? "God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus." Ephesians 2:4-6 It takes a big love for God to offer salvation for us through the death of His Son. A big love from a mighty big God.
