Devotional: 5th of Adar

He is like someone building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on bedrock (Luke 6:48).

It is undeniably true that the integrity of any structure is determined by the foundation upon which it rests. The Scriptures teach that this is just as applicable in spiritual matters as in physical ones. Rabbi Sha'ul (Saul; i.e., Paul) said that Yeshua HaMashiach (the Messiah) was the only foundation that could be laid (1 Corinthians 3:11). Beyond that, the durability of what was built would be directly related to the value of the material used. The end result would be evident when tested by fire. Nevertheless, there are people and groups that claim to have Yeshua as their foundation, and have built sincerely, but have constructed something that is not square.

What is often overlooked is that the foundation itself must be secure. This is why Yeshua speaks of digging deep and reaching bedrock before laying the foundation. The bedrock upon which Yeshua rests is the Torah of God. The entire body of truth contained in the Torah is important, not just the prophecies that point to his coming. If we don't regard Torah as the foundation of revelation, we set the groundwork for aberrant views about Yeshua and, hence, faulty structures. With a sturdy scriptural foundation we will always be able to discern what is true.

...like David, cry out, "Open my eyes, so that I will see wonders from your Torah" (Psalm 119:18).
