Devotional: 21st of Adar

Give us the food we need today (Matthew 6:11).

Az me vil nit alt verren, zol men zich yungerheyt oifhengen is Yiddish for "If you want to avoid old age, hang yourself when you are young."

Do you remember how tough it was when you were twelve and wanted to be sixteen? Then it was wanting to be eighteen. Eventually, thirty arrived, or even worse forty, and you saw the future racing toward you too quickly.

Many of us live either in the past or in the hope that something will come about to change our future, like winning the lottery. This way of thinking stems from forgetting to live in the present. Let us remember that our lives are happening today.

The daily morning preliminary prayers in the siddur (prayer book) contain many petitions for God's blessing on our lives today. Living our lives instead of "thinking about living" is an important part of living the joyful life.

...not live in the past or future but in the present.
