Devotional: 15th of Av

ADONAI, God, prepared a castor-bean plant and made it grow up over Yonah [Jonah] to shade his head and relieve his discomfort (Jonah 4:6).

The day had finally arrived; I was driving to the jeweler's to make my last payment on a necklace for the girl of my dreams. On the front side of the necklace, the silversmith had designed the symbols of the everlasting Brit Chadashah (New Covenant): matzah (unleavened bread) and a cup of wine. On the back, I had him engrave the words, "Harumi, will you marry me?"

I was entering the mall parking lot when I realized I had miscalculated the tax. I was twenty dollars short. "No problem," I thought, "I'll go to the ATM and then to the jeweler." Stepping out of the car, I started toward the mall entrance when I noticed in the distance a piece of paper being carried along by the wind.

It captured my attention and I stopped to watch it. Just like in the movies, it sailed closer and closer until it passed right in front of me. I grabbed it, then opened my hand. It was a twenty dollar bill! I couldn't help but laugh with joy and thankfulness. Adonai Yir'eh (the Lord who will provide) is a living God who wanted to be part of purchasing this most special necklace.

The Lord is concerned with the little things in our lives, not just the big things. The same God who provided a way through the Red Sea also provided a vine as shade for one of his precious prophets (Jonah 4:6).

...keep my eyes open for the little ways in which the Lord expresses his love for me.
