Devotional: 11th of Kislev

You are to erect the tabernacle according to the design you have been shown on the mountain (Exodus 26:30).

The Lord makes this mysterious statement seven times in Scripture. Why was "the design" so important? The writer of the Book of Hebrews explains that the Tabernacle was "a copy and shadow of the heavenly original"(Hebrews 8:5). The Tabernacle in heaven is not a simple structure, but complex in its design. It was necessary, therefore, for the earthly Tabernacle to reflect this careful detail.

David also tells us of God's involvement in building the Temple, another replica of the heavenly Tabernacle. David writes, "ADONAI, with his hand on me, has given me good sense in working out these detailed plans" (1 Chronicles 28:19). God was concerned that his house be built in a certain way, down to the smallest detail.

Many people think that God is concerned only with the big picture and not the details—spiritual areas, but not the nitty-gritty of daily life. Clearly, this is a Greek way of thinking and not typical of the Hebrew mindset.

Let us learn from the Tabernacle and the Temple the matter of detail. Let us remember that God desires that we pursue excellence, even in the smallest details of what he has called us to do in his kingdom.

...pay attention to detail as I serve the Lord.
