Devotional: 12th of Kislev

Focus your minds on things above, not on things here on earth (Colossians 3:2).

Do you ever sit down to pray and experience a loss of words? Over the years I have found that reciting passages of Scripture almost always gets the gears grinding in my mind and heart. It wakes up the inner man (who is sometimes snoozing) and prepares the way for times of intimate fellowship with the Lord. Speaking and pondering God's Word prepares the mind for prayer. It takes our attention off of "things here on earth" and focuses our attention on "things above." God's abiding Word reminds us of God's overall perspective and invites us to see through his eyes. It aligns our hearts with the heart of God.

Would members of a symphony orchestra begin to play Beethoven's Fifth before tuning up their instruments? So we, too, should begin our day "tuning-up" in the presence of the Lord. Just as a tune-up quiets the motor of a car, Scripture meditation quiets our hearts before God. We can then be spiritually refreshed, at peace, and more prepared to enter into heartfelt conversation with our Abba (Father).

...begin my times of prayer by reciting Scripture.
