All That Matters
Date Posted: January 22, 2005

I use a lot of time, energy and money on things that really don't matter that much. I'm recognizing that more each day, and trying to revise more, but I still like nice things and I like things done nicely.

I don't live lavishly, but I could live much more sensibly and frugally and my resources could benefit so many others. I don't live in a mansion or drive a new car or carry designer handbags -- not the really expensive ones, anyway. But it's not just my monetary resources that could be redirected for God's glory. My time, energy, prayer and encouragement could be spread around more effectively without the encumbrance of all those "things".

In Luke 12:33 Jesus says, "Sell you possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out" (He doesn't mean Prada or Gucci!), "a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Is Jesus really telling us to sell our home, our car, everything we own and become paupers? No, probably not, although some have done just that and been blessed as they blessed others. But I need to get those "treasures" assessed in my heart. Which belong and which don't? What should I give up, do without or share to the benefit of God's kingdom?

My prayer and focus this week is that I can serve God by serving others and not myself.
