Primary Colors
Date Posted: October 13, 2007

I love colors! Primary, secondary, muted, pastel - colors make life interesting.

My love of colors doesn't always get expressed in my everyday life, though. I'm always attracted to bright-colored clothing, but for some reason end up buying lots of muted pieces. I do a bit better with my accessories. I can claim a pair of lime green shoes with matching handbag, scarf, hat and gloves and I have some bright blue shoes which definitely draw attention. But one place I have learned to let loose with my colorful creations is in my home.

The bedrooms in our home would provide the perfect palette for any young child to learning the mixing of colors. My younger son's bedroom is yellow. He really had no choice as it was painted for a guest room before he was born, but he doesn't seem to be bothered by it. We bought some wall border with cool cars on it which blends well with the wall color and he loves it. My older son's room is bright blue with an indigo ceiling. Sounds weird, I know, but he wanted a "space" room when he was about six. We painted the ceiling like the night sky and stuck glow stars all over it, with the planets hanging in one corner.

My room (well, it's my husband's too, but he didn't give a lot of input into the decorating) is red. Somewhere between tomato and apple. The furniture, mirrors and picture frames are all off-white, which pops from the walls and provides an atmosphere between surreal and spa. I had wanted to paint our room for several years and it finally got accomplished this summer. I love it!

I'm trying to work my way downstairs. Since we bought our house almost 10 years ago I've wanted the living room to be painted sage green. I now have all the accessories in place to coordinate with my wall color, but haven't convinced my husband to paint - yet. Our kitchen has cranberry-colored cabinets, which I loved when we moved in and I had a watermelon theme going in my kitchen (leftover from our previous home). Now, however, I'm kind of over it and I want to paint the cabinets pumpkin orange and use sage green accents throughout the room. (See, my rooms do have some transition!)

How can primary colors, or any colors, relate to our walk with God? Why am I prattling about paint jobs? Hmm . . . that's a good question.

Well, for me the color of something - clothes or walls - is the starting point for cool accessories like shoes, jewelry, hats and handbags or curtains, throw pillows and lampshades. When I coordinate my surroundings I feel more confident and I enjoy the visual effect. It gives me a sense of satisfaction when I dress in daring colors or snuggle into my favorite chair with a good book and can feel uplifted by my design choices.

My relationship with God is the color in my life, my base, my covering, my definition. It is the basis for relationships, growth, blessings and wisdom. When I seek God's will it opens up infinite possibilities for good things to happen and keeps me strong through the tough times.

"But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe." - Galatians 3:22
