(in chastising David and the people, the Lord said) It is enough! 2 Samuel 24:16b

Unnecessary discipline is counterproductive, cruel, corrosive, corruptive, detrimental, distressing, erosive, injurious, malignant, toxic, and venomous.

(David was offered a free place and supplies to erect an alter to God, but said) ‘I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.’ 2 Samuel 24:24
A sacrifice of praise will always cost you something. It will be a difficult thing to do. It requires trading in our pride, our anger, and most valued of all, our human logic. We will be compelled to voice our words of praise firmly and precisely, even as our logic screams that God has no idea what he’s doing. Joni Eareckson Tada, quadriplegic author, artist

Now King David was old (and bed ridden). Adonijah (his oldest son) exalted himself, saying, ‘I will be king.’ 1 Kings 1:1a, 5a

When our desires collaborate with our presumptions, we conveniently neglect an investigation of the truth.

(dying David, informed of Adonijah’s attempt to take the throne, is prompted) the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 1 Kings 1:20

Responsibility is not negated by our situation. Distraction by legitimate issues is not an excuse to allow neglect to take its course.

(dying David to Bathsheba) I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place. 1 Kings 1:30

.what a mercy it is that the Lord makes our strength equal to our day, and only when the day is over does he let us sink into ourselves. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834-92, British Reformed Baptist, highly influential amongst Christians of different denominations
