David sent to ask about (the beautiful woman he saw bathing).. 2 Samuel 11:3a

(David already had many wives and concubines)

You say, 'If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.' You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834-92, British Reformed Baptist, highly influential amongst Christians of different denominations

(They said to David about the beautiful woman) ‘Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?’ David sent messengers and took her, and lay with her. 11:3b, 4

Uriah was one of David's mightiest of the mighty men off fighting in the war where David should have been. Eliam was the son of Ahithophel, Bathsheba's grandfather and one of David's trusted counselors.

There is a slumbering inclination toward desire, which is both sudden and fierce. With irresistible power, desire seizes mastery... a secret, smoldering fire is kindled... at this moment God is quite unreal to us...the powers of clear discrimination and of decision are taken from us... the Bible teaches us in times of temptation... there is one command: Flee! Get away from it... for every struggle against lust in one's own strength is doomed to failure. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran pastor, German Christian martyr, 1906-1945

(Learning that Bathsheba had conceived, David sent for her husband Uriah and) asked him for news from the front--how things were going and said go down to your house (in hopes that he would think the baby his) 2 Samuel 11:5-8

The whole concept of hiding our sin is deceptive. Our sin is never hidden before God and only hidden with difficulty from our conscience. Our hidden sin hinders our fellowship with God and others and is a barrier to spiritual life and power. Dave Guzik, Conservative, Evangelical, Millennial

(Uriah to David on why he did not go home), "The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields (where David should be). Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.2 Samuel 11:9-11

Example is the most powerful rhetoric. Thomas Benton Brooks, 1608-80

(after 2 more days of giving Uriah an opportunity to go home) .David got Uriah drunk. But in the evening Uriah again went out and slept with his master's servants. He didn't go home. 2 Samuel 11:12,13

Commitment to divine purpose coupled with daily willful discipline, strengthens our center of gravity to help hold us on the track regardless of the headwinds.
