David was weeping and lamenting over (the death of) Absalom. So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people (felt ashamed). 2 Samuel 19:1-3

Although sorrow can overwhelm, there are those who still depend on us.

Joab (to David) Today you have disgraced all your servants who today have saved your life (and family’s). Now therefore, arise, go out and speak comfort to your servants. .if you do not go out, not one will stay with you this night. 2 Samuel 19:5-7

If you want to get an idea across, wrap it up in a person or people (Perhaps with more tact than pragmatic, merciless Joab) . Ralph Bunche, 1904-

.Shimei (who had cursed David when he was down and out) . rushed to the king (as David crossed the Jordan on his return to Jerusalem) and said "Let not my lord consider me guilty, nor remember what your servant did wrong. For I, your servant, know that I have sinned. 2 Samuel 19:16-20
