Can God Get Glory from My Life?
by Dominique Henderson
Every now and then I catch myself watching a movie that starts at the end and works its way back to the beginning. (I am pretty sure those type of movies have a name, although I do not know it.) I do not prefer these types of movies but for some reason I am intrigued on how the director and writer work together to captivate the audience to keep them watching even though they have seen the end already. I guess what gets me is that although you know the end of the movie, there is something more that has been hidden that you are waiting for so you continue to watch to find out what it is. At least that is what happens to me! There is a movie that is like that and it is called your life. Only, God is the director/writer/producer that knows the end of your life and the purpose he has called you to fulfill. He allows us to see the ups and downs that we will face on the way to where he wants us to go, but yet he has a way of captivating us further until our purpose has played out. At times we try to act like the big-shot actor/actress and tell God how we want the movie to play out. As if we know best. But since he’s in control he already knows everything. He knows perfectly how the movie of your life is supposed to happen. At times, I feel like I am being pulled in a trance-like way towards my purpose in the kingdom. And at other times, I want to throw in the towel or give up on the faith but God will pull out another cliffhanger as any good movie director does and keep me wanting more so I continue to “play along”. By this process God teaches me that his purpose is so much greater than the trial or test I may be facing. He wants me to totally rely on him for provision, protection and peace. I guess this is my second point about people that have found their purpose—they realize the big picture. Realizing the big picture is not just a secular cliché. When we begin to realize the big picture that God has for advancing the kingdom agenda, we can then learn to focus on his will for our lives and not our own. Going back to our model (Jesus Christ), had he been consumed with putting the Jewish leaders in their place or making a name for himself he would have been guilty of advancing his will and not God’s. But he stuck with the plan for his life which was to be lifted up on the cross so that all men would have the opportunity for right standing with God the Father. That was the plan. How much more can we live a life on purpose for God now that we see the “big picture”?
