Can God Get Glory from My Life?

Remove My Crutches Lord! (Part 1 of 2)
Date Posted: October 12, 2008

“When God wants you to hear Him, He’ll remove your crutches so that you lean on Him instead of them.”

Late one day in August, I struggled with a heavy personal decision that would impact my family. I had become restless at my current job, and as a Christian striving for excellence in my walk with God I was perplexed as to my next step. Should I leave the place of employment that had nurtured me mentally and financially for the previous eight years or stay in my supposed comfort zone? Should I leave to walk into a spiritual “abyss” or remain at my current level of faith? My job was great from many standpoints. Actually, if I had written a pros and cons list before I handed in my letter of resignation and published it in a book you would think that I should be in an asylum not sitting at my desk writing! But Isaiah 55:8-9 is so true. It reads, "My thoughts are completely different from yours, says the LORD. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (NLT) Interestingly enough, early in the book of Isaiah [chapter 7] King Ahaz has to make a decision to either trust God or use his own wisdom. Ultimately the king doesn't choose to trust God and unfortunately that decision leads to the end of the nation of Israel's independence. Although I didn't have that story as reference at that time in my life, I had consulted my wife and my God. So after eight years of stellar service and loyalty to my employer, I walked in on the last day of August and handed my resignation letter to my boss (and personal friend).

Looking back on that chapter in my life, I can truly say that had that not happened there would be no words for you to read now. I would not have catapulted my faith walk with God to the next level. I would not have started my own business. I'm sure a lot of other things would not have unfolded either. So I say this with the utmost conviction: God has historically removed unnecessary supports from the lives of His heroes of faith to help them rely on Him and His promise instead of their own volition. So today hear what God is trying to tell you to let go of in your life. Is it a job? A relationship? A habit? What crutch do you need to shed, in order to trust God more?

Remember, our Heavenly Father knows so much more than we do.

Meditate on these examples of God’s providence in these passages. Suggested readings: Isaiah 55:6-9 , Genesis 45:4-15; 50:20 Philippians 1:6
