"So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom" - Psalm 90:12
You have heard it many times. Some wise one, who had numbered some days said, "time flies!". There is the realization that it is gone. Some have more behind than they do in front. No one knows how many are in front. Moses prayed that God would teach the Israelites to number their days, in order to apply wisdom to the heart. But how can you number days that are in front of you?
The only way is to live your live is as if you knew how many days are in front. In that process, Godly wisdom is given (Matthew 6:34).
For if you knew, all things would look entirely different. Some have been told approximately how many days they have to number. Their world has been turned upside down. Priorities are shifted instantly. Psalm 90 was written by Moses sometime during the forty-year wilderness wandering. Israel had failed to remain faithful to God. Their days had been numbered. They eventually became forty years. Undoubtedly, many during those days began to number their days, and grow into true wisdom. But for all that first generation, it was too little and too late. Moses counted the days, and applied his heart to wisdom. Even so, he did not enter the Promised Land. He only saw it afar off.
Time that is going by us can either encourage or discourage. Either way, the pages of life are written. Looking back at how many those days have been, God wants to enlighten you about how you should live, and should not live, your tomorrows. Memory of those days is designed only to inform, not deform us with regrets, but to warn. They should warn you of how fragile life in the flesh is. When your life is "hidden in Christ" in God, numbering the days should produce information only. Information about how to grow in more wisdom, and how to live by it.
The thread of what we call life is so very, very slim. Everything about what we call life hangs by that smallest of threads. That thread is a heartbeat. Every one is a wonderful gift from God. The young should remember to consider their youth, for it is fleeting. In a world that is increasing exponentially into hard heartedness, numbering of the days that remain lies at the seat of wisdom.
How many days do you have to number? God in His wisdom does not tell you. Part of counting is to ponder deeply at the end of each day, and when another begins. Today, there is one less than you had yesterday. How many more? Only God knows (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Each day should remind you of the prayer of Moses about numbering our days, so that you are enabled to find wisdom before your days expire.
Whatever the number of your days, stop and ponder with your whole heart as if you knew the number of your days. If you do, you will find the wisdom of God. By so doing, you will enter your eternal promised land (Hebrews 4:6-11). Foreseeing and understanding consequences is a priority principle for applying your heart to wisdom. If you number your days, there comes a wisdom gift from God. A kind of "wisdom" that can be acquired through experience, that educates the mind not to choose those things which accommodate the self interest. But true wisdom for making choices and acquiring beliefs that always apply at all times, in all seasons, in all circumstances, and for all decisions is a wisdom the Spirit bestows from applying your heart to wisdom during your days.
If you do not number your days, your days will number you, and can deceive you, without your knowledge or consent, and without your awareness. May you number your days - and apply your heart to wisdom.
