A Sign Goeth Before Something (At Least It Should)
Date Posted: July 30, 2006

Like clouds and wind without rain
is a man who boasts of gifts he does not give.
Psalm 25:14

They've been saying it was going to happen for months. And yet, it never has.

I've told you before about the street that leaves our neighbor that is ½ country, and 1/2 city. One side is open field with a big canal. The other side has a new apartment complex and several shopping centers. There's Gold's Gym and a pizza place in one center. The other center just opened a guitar store, a lube-n-oil place, and a look-like-a-body-builder vitamin store.

However, one of the first signs to go up in the plaza was for a restaurant called—well I guess I shouldn't tell you what's it's called. That would sound like bad advertising (when this column is really about us, not the restaurant.) And this restaurant has one of the fanciest signs in the whole center. It's a Mexican restaurant that by the looks of the name (which I can't tell you) is going to be very authentic. Scott and I love authentic Mexican.

The sign has been up, and up, and up, for months now. But still no food. The windows are all covered up with brown butcher paper so you can't see in. There's a little notice on the door telling you that the restaurant is applying for a license to sell alcohol. But still there is no food.

The sign keeps telling us what it's going to do. We keep waiting and waiting and waiting to be faithful customers. Yet still, the sign proclaims something that does not happen.

My Mamaw Bell used to say it something like this: "Don't tell people what you're gonna do, just do it." James says it like this:

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins. (James :13-17, NIV)

So, let's take down our signs if we're never going to sell any food.
