Putting God First: In Our Actions

"Self-preoccupation, self-broodings, self-interest, self-love—these are the reasons we jar each other.
Learn to give and not to take; to drown your own hungry wants
in the happiness of lending yourself to fulfill the interests of those nearest and dearest."
Joy and Strength

My four sons, the Mathews Brothers as we like to call them, know our loose interpretation of the Golden Rule: "Treat others the way you want to be treated." But they sometimes get a little confused about the order of events. They tend to treat people the way they HAVE been treated. If one gets in trouble for kicking the other, his defense is that he got kicked two days ago. They tend to act the way others have acted.

Do you tend to act the way others around you are acting, or do you put God first in your actions by acting first for God? Before you do ANYTHING, do you take into account this truth in Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter."

And what, you might ask, is the will of the Father in Heaven? James 2:8 says that we are acting in accordance with the royal law when we "Love our neighbors as ourselves." That is when we ACT well. We put God first in our actions when we put others first in our interactions.
