I'm not that old, but the school I graduated from was so small (and underfinanced) that we learned to type on manual typewriters—the kind where you develop muscles in your fingers that you didn't know you had--the kind of typewriter where you pushed a silver bar to "return" the carriage to the beginning of the next line. Mrs. McKinney wouldn't let us use the four electric typewriters (that we shared) until we could type on the manual ones.
Fan can man ran man can and sand hand land
I never thought it would happen, but it did get easier. I could actually type words without looking at the keyboard.

And now, when I sit down at the computer, my fingers seem disconnected from my brain. I wonder how they know what they are doing. I couldn't map out a keyboard if you paid me 100 bucks. I don't know where the letters are, yet my fingers do.
It's kind of like learning a new habit- keeping the kitchen clean, for instance. That was part of my New Year's resolution in 2004. And low and behold, a mere 365 days later, I had it looking just the way I wanted. (There's nothing like a deadline.) The first time I put EVERYTHING away and wiped off ALL the counters, I felt like I had run 12 miles. But now, it's been (mostly) that way for 49 days, and I'm not even sure when I clean it. (hmm, maybe Scott is cleaning it?!)

Or the first time I decided to be more patient with my kids. It took all the self-control I had plus some of Scott's. And now, patience and quiet words are almost (I said almost) second nature.
