For Heaven's Sake, Spit it Out!
Date Posted: October 8, 2006

For the life of me, I don't know why I didn't spit it out. It's not like it was even that good. Yet still, I swirled the blazing bite of food around in my mouth like it was a Mexican jumping bean.

It was Thursday evening. I had gotten home from school at about 5:15, and was hungry. Since my mother spoiled me rotten with good food growing up, I often feel like I haven't eaten unless the food is warm. The boys were heading out to football practice, and my schedule that night allowed no time for cooking. The only potential "warm" dinner to be had was a frozen burrito. And we all know how hard it is to get a frozen burrito warm on the inside without turning the outside into stone. So I heated it up, and did a quite lousy job of it.

I guess I thought the bite would cool off before it seared my cheek, the roof of my mouth, and the top of my tongue. But it didn't. I swirled it around side to side, back to back, over my tongue, and under my tongue until I finally gave up and swallowed it. Days later, I'm still paying for my unwillingness to let go of it.

It reminded me of the sin we just have to have, but then burns and scalds us in the end.

Kay Arthur, a Christian writer, puts it this way:
"If you tolerate sin in your life, that sin will not only take you farther than you wanted to go, it will keep you longer than you wanted to stay and it will cost you more than you thought you'd pay..."

Hebrews 12:1 says it this way "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

And let us spit out the burning burrito of sin, for heaven's sake.
