Give it Up Already! (Or Not)

"those who trust in the Lord…will soar on wings like Eagles" Is 40:31

Some people just don't know when to quit.

Such was the case with this little boy that went with my son to Environmental Education Camp a couple years ago. (He will remain un-named for many reasons.)

He was a precious boy- tall and thin, dark hair, half Asian and half Caucasian. I think he might have a mild case of cerebral palsy. But I don't think he knows it- which is one of the reasons he will remain anonymous. His long, right leg turns in just a bit, and he seems like he might have been dragging it.

He is also smart as all get out. He asked a million questions and was keenly interested in every answer.

One day we went on this uphill hike in the drizzling rain to view an osprey (big, hawk-like bird) nest. His back pack felt like it weighed 100 pounds. I asked him if it was getting heavy.
"No, it's fine, really." He was either smiling or intently listening to our guide all the way up the hill. And he was about the only one that never complained about the distance.

Then one day we did our high course challenges-- the high, scary things I mentioned a few columns back. Our sweet un-named boy went third, after two kids did well but failed to reach the Eagles Perch and stand up on the little green disc at the top of the telephone pole.

He went faster than anyone. He raced to the top of the ladder, quickly maneuvered the staple steps, and was standing on the top before the rest of us figured out what was going on. He smiled this monstrous smile, then leaped out to touch the volleyball hanging in the air.

I was glad the spotty rain was camouflaging my misty eyes. Did this kid not realize he wasn't capable of this!?!! He limped for crying out loud! He wasn't supposed to be the fastest, most fearless one of the bunch. He didn't know he couldn't do it- so he did it!!!

There are so many times I don't do something because I don't think it can be done. I don't share the gospel with __________ because I don't think she wants to hear it. I don't save for a new double oven because I'll never be able to wait that long. I don't diet, because we all know that's just plain impossible.

And yet Paul would beg to differ. "I can do everything through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13) I can fly to the top of the Eagle's Perch, even if I drag my foot when I walk. I just can't give it up already before I even start.
