He Knows My Name (And My Drink)
Date Posted: September 10, 2006

I really have gotten much better. Really. My Starbuck's visits are down to just one or two a week. Forgive me if I don't look at my bank account records to confirm or deny that, but it certainly feels like I've cut back. The need to be on time to school because I don't have first hour prep has certainly helped.

So, you might imagine my pleasant surprise when Julie (the barista at Starbucks) still remembered the precision of my drink. My husband thinks I do it (triple grande, three pump toffee nut, percent with whip latte) just to be a coffee snob, but I really just like it that way. What stunned me even more was her thoughtfulness: "Melissa, the pumpkin spice syrup is back for fall. That's really what you want, isn't it?"

Of course it was. She knew what I wanted before I asked. And she knew my name to write on the cup.

I love the song from Tommy Walker: "He [God] knows my name/ He knows my every thought/ He sees each tear that falls/ And He hears me when I call." Jackson learned to play the song on the piano at Brant and Michelle's house (sister and brother-in-law) the weekend Scott and I were gone for our anniversary, and the weekend we found out they were moving back home. The song struck me as deeply appropriate for the situation.

Matthew 6:7 says it even better than Mr. Walker: "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words...for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him." (NIV)

God knows what I need as I pray about my sister leaving, or getting the Senior English position, or making a huge financial decisiong. He knows my name, and my drink too.
