Mono-Tasking Revisited
Date Posted: September 19, 2004

Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete,
not lacking anything. (James 1:4, NIV)

We are coming into the final stretch. We have entered month 9 of 2004. Only 3 ½ months left to finish the year. And it's not too late. It's not too late to dig deep. It's not too late to take a long breath and throw that monkey off your back (to use a runner's term I am personally unfamiliar with).

It's not too late to remember the dream that was mono-tasking whereby you planned to accomplish one small improvement in your life this year. There are 104 days left. That gives you several chances to practice (or abstain from) that habit 21 days in a row. They say that's all it takes.

My husband has just lost 46 covetous pounds. I've been extremely tempted to get distracted from my one resolution by going on a diet. But no matter how fine my husband looks and how fat I feel, I will not be moved!

In fact, the minute I get home from vacation next week, I'm going to work on my resolution with a vengeance. And I'm not kidding. I will mono-task like a mad woman.

I've got this friend coming to stay with me, and she scares me. She really does. That one thing I'm working on (and no, I haven't said what it is), she is REALLY good at it. She's not just good at it, I think she set the world record. She hasn't just passed me on the inside by a few hundred meters, she's lapped me about 12 times and left me sprawled out with my face in the cinders. She's coming to my house! And I really have to get on that one thing, or she might have to stand on the porch the whole time she's here.

So this week, I don't have a story, just a cheer:

"On through the hours the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: "Do that one thing!"

(adapted from an Old Saxon Legend)

(For the rest of the scoop on mono-tasking, see "One Thing Well" in the Girl Meets God archive. It was posted on January 4,2004.)
