Heart to Heart

A Love Story
Date Posted: September 29, 2010

One of my all time favorite movies is Love Story. I cry every time I watch the part where Ali McGraw says to Ryan O’Neal, love means you never have to say you’re sorry. Unfortunately, I believed this line and adopted this principle into my marriage when I first said I do back in 1977. I didn’t care how wrong I was; I refused to say “I’m sorry”. Needless to say, that did not go over well with my husband.

When Kirk and I counsel young marrieds, we are quick to share that the first five years of marriage were rough...really rough. We promised that we never would use the “D” word, but I’m sure Kirk often thought about the “M” word – Murder.

Okay, maybe it was not that bad, but since we have come so far from those days just thinking about them gives me a pit in my stomach. You see, Kirk and I both were not Christians when we first got married. We had a lot going for us for sure, but God-loving people we were not. It was not until I got the news that maybe I would never be able to conceive a child did my knee bend and I found my need for a Savior.

Many times it does take a trial or heartache in our lives before we realize that something is missing. For Kirk it was thinking that he had a brain tumor. He did not buy it when I would impersonate Arnold Schwarzenegger and tell him, “It’s not a tumor!”

God used two complete different circumstances, but the outcome was the same. We both came into a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. So what is your story? Do you have a story, or is God still working in the background trying to get your attention so that one day you will have a story.

My husband and I often sit and talk about our lives and all that happened to us over the years. We are confident that without Christ we could not have made it. There would have definitely been some fatalities along the way, if we both did not cry out to God.

So regardless of where you are at today, or where you are heading, I pray that God is leading your way. And if you have never begun living the best love story ever, call out to God today and let him answer you so He can begin showering you with His love and attention.

I know once this happens you feel so unworthy because no one really deserves any of this. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Ephesians 2:8

But take this free gift and begin truly living and share your story with everyone. Then when it is time for your story to end it will definitely be a happily ever after ending, as you embrace Jesus for the first time and you hear him whisper in your ear: You had me from hello.

A perfect ending to a true love story indeed!

But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,”

His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones.

I am weary of holding in it, indeed I cannot.

Jeremiah 20:9
